Best of Peru & Bolivia

My daughter and I have recently returned from a World Expeditions Best of Peru and Bolivia tour and I thought that I would give you our thoughts on the tour. The accommodation, meals, transport and organisation were excellent Ė the long-boat trips were just lovely.

After arriving at our accommodation in Cusco (the owner was such a nice woman) we met our main guide, Veronica Illa. There was nothing that Veronica didnít know about this wonderful area around Cusco and she was willing to do anything for us. She is certainly a wonderful guide and we feel privileged that she was our tour leader. Once again the transport,drivers and attractions we visited were excellent. We were always picked up on time and our luggage was always taken care of. Everything ran very smoothly.

The ruins at Ollantaytambo were breathtaking and Veronica explained in detail, the Inca history. We loved our accommodation here! We started off on our 4 day Inca trek and at an early stage got to marvel at our wonderful porters. They are such hard working people who we admired greatly. The tents were always set up for us well before we arrived for meals and sleeping (and the toilet facilities).

But I think everyone was surprised by the quality and quantity of the food that was served up for each meal Ė piping hot and on time, every time. The gear pack and tents were all in very good condition and everything ran like clockwork. We were sad to see our porters leave us on Day 4.

The history of Machu Picchu was explained so well by Veronica and we had a lovely stay at Aguas Calientes before our trip back to Cusco.

Lake Titicaca is a magical place. The floating islands are amazing but the jewel in the crown on the lake was Taquile Island. We had such a wonderful time on this island with the homestay family. The family was very welcoming and we had a fun-filled time with their 3 little girls. They served us lovely food and we could have quite happily spent another night on this island to wander and discover a little more.

Our Bolivian guide, Sandro Diaz and our new driver took us to our lovely Hotel in La Paz.
We felt that Peru was so happy to welcome tourists to their wonderful country.

Overall,we had a wonderful experience in a different culture which we enjoyed immensely. I knew that I would love Peru but I just didnít realise how much !! Thank you World Expeditions.

There is little doubt that kayaking is a fine way to explore remote rivers and coastlines. It is expected that you have attempted sea kayaking prior to joining a sea kayaking adventure. Our sea kayaking trips explore Tasmania and Queensland in Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji in the South Pacific. For our sea kayaking trips it is necessary that you have a sound fitness level of fitness in order to complete the six to seven hours of kayaking per day. In addition we offer kayaking in Antarctica and the Arctic.  Again some experience is necessary in order to undertake this option.

  • Discovery & Cruising

    Discovery & Cruising

    Discovery & Cruising
    These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping.

    Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2 -3 months prior to departure.

  • Adventure Touring

    Adventure Touring
    These adventure tours sometimes involve travel at high altitude (rarely exceeding 4000m, except on certain trips in Tibet, Peru and India) and may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity. To enjoy these adventures we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

    Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

  • Introductory

    Introductory
    These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. These trips do not spend time at altitudes above 4000m and are usually a week in duration. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

    Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trek. For trekking, hill walking with a daypack in variable weather conditions is also recommended. For a cycling adventure, road cycling twice a week for three months prior to departure is recommended.

    These trips involve a combination of what is described in our INTRODUCTORY and MODERATE levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with several moderate stages

    Moderate
    These adventures involve trekking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. The majority of our moderately graded treks involve the carrying of a day pack only, though some may involve carrying a full pack. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions.

    Suggested preparation; 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend will accustom you to regular exercise. Hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions will be beneficial if you are taking part in a trekking adventure, kayaking or road cycling is also recommended depending upon the activity you plan to undertake.

  • Moderate to Challenging

    This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our MODERATE and CHALLENGING levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with several challenging stages.
