In 2010 with the help of World Expeditions we put together a 4 week trip to Borneo, which included the ascent of Kinabalu, trekking the headhunters trail and shooting rapids in a longboat.
However one of the highlights was the Rejang River Tour. The combination of the superbly opulent teak and brass appointments of the boat together with food and service of the highest quality and the exposure to the real Borneo was really remarkable.
Our ship’s guide, Louis Jap, through daily excursions into the hinterland, introduced us to the history and tribal culture of this part of Borneo. We trekked in the jungle. We visited longhouses, participated in a wonderful village Muslim wedding, where we appeared to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the guests. We transferred to smaller boats to sail small tributaries to see the early morning wildlife. We visited a remote jungle boarding school and medical centre, and had regular evening entertainment from local school children and dancers as we moored up for the night.
The ships crew welcomed us back to the boat after each excursion with hot towels and drinks – and took our footwear to clean before we could soil the deck. When we were cruising we could just relax with our 20 fellow passengers and have all our needs attended to.
This is only a taste of a trip, which certainly exceeded our expectations by a country mile!!
The World Expeditions Travel Group
The Evolution of the World Expeditions Travel Group
The World Expeditions story began in 1975, when Australian Himalayan Expeditions commenced its operations with trekking holidays in Nepal. In subsequent years, the company expanded its operations into South America, Asia and then Africa.
To reflect the broader spread of holidays on offer, Australian Himalayan Expeditions changed its name to World Expeditions and continued providing high quality adventure holidays to small groups of like-minded travellers. The strong alignment to responsible tourism practices and commitment to supporting local communities remained at its core.
In the next ten years, World Expeditions continued to expand its operations to include all seven continents. Simultaneously, the Australian product range was greatly expanded, to include the first commercial rafting trips on the Franklin River and pioneering the iconic Larapinta Trail near Alice Springs. A merger with Tasmanian Expeditions and its superb range of walking holidays cemented World Expeditions’ place as a leader in the Australian space.
To service travellers in other parts of the world, a network of sales offices was established in New Zealand, the UK and Canada, as well as the Australian offices, resulting in a truly international mix on group departures.
In 2005, the company created UTracks to provide guided and self-guided walking and cycling holidays in Europe. The European operations were strengthened in 2012 when World Expeditions acquired UK company, Sherpa Expeditions and its extensive UK walking program. The combined UTracks - Sherpa program now offers more than 400 guided and self-guided itineraries across Europe.
Meanwhile, an opportunity to buy into New Zealand’s Adventure South operations was warmly received, with its style of travel fitting perfectly with World Expeditions. Adventure South remains the leading cycle specialist in New Zealand offering an exciting range of holidays ranging from the Otago Rail Trail to road cycle trips around the south Island.
An ongoing focus on the charity sector, is reflected by the company’s not-for-profit arm, Community Project Travel and its work with humanitarian projects globally. In addition to this, World Expeditions has worked over the decades to deliver funds for charities through travel. The company’s expertise in delivering unique itineraries led to the launch of a dedicated charity brand in 2013. Huma Charity Challenge centralizes the entire group’s fundraising trips under one umbrella. Charity challenges are specialised areas of travel, requiring management of fundraisers and the creation of specific charity challenge trips and Huma is poised to become a major provider in this sector.
The Youth Market has also been a prime focus for the company since the late 80s. Its work with schools and youth groups on international and domestic itineraries led to the establishment of World Youth Adventures, which was launched in 2010. Today, World Youth Adventures works with hundreds of schools across the globe to deliver meaningful travel experiences, many of which feature a component of service learning work, providing the added benefit of delivering tangible benefits to communities in developing countries.
Completing the company’s suite of adventure travel offerings is Yomads, which was created in 2013 in partnership with two European travel companies, exclusively for travellers in their 20s and 30s. Yomads, which is short for young nomads, offers a series of unique adventures which combine structured activities with plenty of downtime to relax or undertake optional tours.
The World Expeditions Travel Group was registered in 2013 to incorporate the various brands into one organization. Collectively, the brands offer diverse and complementary travel products catering to the specific interests and segments within the international adventure travel market.

Tasmanian Expeditions is the most experienced operator of treks and adventure travel holidays in Tasmania. Since then, as Tasmanian Expeditions, we’ve pioneered commercial trekking on the rugged South Coast Track, in the spectacular Walls of Jerusalem as well as to the remote areas of Frenchman's Cap and the Western Arthurs. Our walking, cycling, rafting and rock climbing itineraries, all led by passionate and experienced guides are as diverse as Tasmania herself.

The company offers a range of self guided inn to inn walking & cycling tours, escorted walks and expeditions, Himalayan Tours as well as Walker's Britain, a pioneering collection of over 20 British walking tours which include the Coast to Coast Trail and Hadrian’s Wall. Sherpa has refined self guided holidays to an art. Over many years their leaders, local representatives and clients have all contributed to the detailed trail notes provided to walkers, making them the definitive guide to the areas they visit, which includes 16 iconic European walking destinations such as France, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and much more.

Huma Charity Challenge is a specialist provider of charity challenges, drawing on World Expeditions' decades of experience in offering high quality adventure travel experiences. One of the original pioneers of the charity challenge concept, we began operating challenges for charities in the UK and Australia when the concept of fundraising through travel was first conceived in the late 1990’s. Since then we have successfully organised over 500 adventures for charities around the globe ranging from International Agencies to National Charities and many smaller local charitable causes, enabling the collection of over 1 million in funds raised. The word 'Huma' also refers to a Persian mythological "Bird of Paradise", which is considered to be a compassionate bird. It is believed that the touch of the Huma brings great fortune.
