Why We Love Kangaroo Island

Just off the mainland of South Australia is Australia’s best-kept secret - Kangaroo Island. Boasting an abundance of Australian wildlife, stunning coastlines, pristine beaches and remote walking tracks...it is truly a hidden gem.

Due to isolation from the mainland, it is home to dozens of unique species and is the ideal place to experience untouched Australia. It is Australia’s third largest island and is seven times the size of Singapore, so as you can imagine - it is flourishing with wildlife!

Besides the fact that Koalas out-number people and it has a great name, these are the reasons why we absolutely love Kangaroo Island!

Australia’s Third Largest Seal Colony

Perhaps one of the highlights of Kangaroo Island is Seal Bay, which is home to Australia’s third largest colony of Australian sea lions. Seal Bay is a Conservation Park and these endangered animals can be viewed on specially guided seal tours which are included in our Kangaroo Island Walking Itinerary.

Incredible Rock Formations

With 27 officially designated geological monuments, no visit to Kangaroo Island is complete without seeing some of the island’s spectacular rock formations. The most famous being Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, located in Flinders Chase National Park - which is one of the larger parks on Kangaroo Island and one of the first National Parks in Australia, declared a National Park in 1919.

Remarkable Rocks

Remarkable Rocks are granite boulders that are truly distinctive and were created after 500 million years of wind, rain and pounding waves.

Admirals Arch

Admirals Arch is a natural rock bridge which was made after thousands of years of erosion and an interesting feature of the arch is the stalactites dangling from the roof, ruminants from being a former cave. The arch can be viewed on a platform which is accessed on a boardwalk, also an ideal place to observe the New Zealand seal colony that live below the landmark.

An Abundance of Australian Wildlife

Due to isolation from the mainland, Kangaroo Island has been spared from introduced species and this has allowed the flora and fauna to flourish, with more than 50 plant species unique to the island and a very diverse range of animals.

Animal species include kangaroos, koalas, tammar wallabies, echidnas, penguins, Australian sea lions, New Zealand fur seals and over 250 bird species. Bush walking on the island presents a great opportunity to see these animals in their natural habitats.

Pristine Beaches

With 540km’s of coastline and more than 50 white sandy beaches with turquoise waters, Kangaroo Island's beaches are a major draw card. The island's most famous beach is Vivonne Bay and has been ranked one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.

Remote Walking Trails

With a third of the island devoted to National and Conservation Parks, it is no-wonder Kangaroo Island is home to such pristine bush land. Along with that comes remote walking trails that will take you to on the path less travelled. The bush-cloaked national parks and stunning coastlines make for a perfect walking destination where you can discover underground caves and enjoy incredible island views.
