Most of Hungary is a fertile, rolling plain lying east of the Danube River and drained by the Danube and Tisza Rivers. In the extreme northwest is the Little Hungarian Plain. It has seven neighbours in all - Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. The country has over 1000 lakes - the largest, Balaton, is strewn with thermal springs.

The Weather in Hungary

Temperatures in Hungary vary from the minus twenties to the plus thirties (celcius)!

The western part of the country usually receives more rain than the eastern part, where long dry spells may occur in summertime. Weather conditions in the Great Plain can be especially harsh, with hot summers, cold winters, and scant rainfall.

May and June can be wet months but springtime is a great time to visit in Hungary. The Hungarian summer is warm, sunny and unusually long.

November is one of the rainiest months of the year, however. Winter can be very cold - so pack your winter woolies!
