Guatemala is a small country that is dense with jungles and forested highlands. It is peppered with volcanoes, many of which are still active. Guatemala has over 8000 species of plants, divided between its nineteen ecosystems. Toucans, quetzals, macaws and parrots may be seen, along with herons, hawks, hummingbirds and waterfowl.Guatemala is a republic, with executive power vested in its president. Throughout its modern history it has, however, been ruled by a succession of military strongmen. Guatemalan society is divided into two sections – the indigenous Maya (the majority) and the mestizo, Guatemalans of Spanish blood, who hold the country’s economic and political power. Twenty-one different Mayan languages are still spoken today.
