Nicaragua | Adventure: Trekking, Hiking & Tours | World Expeditions

Most people have recollections of Nicaragua as a revolutionary hot spot, plagued by censorship, guerrilla warfare and political turbulence, but fortunately, the country has enjoyed remarkable stability since 1990.

Although Nicaragua remains Central America’s poorest nation, this is a safe, welcoming and affordable destination packed full of stunning landscapes, gorgeous colonial architecture and famously friendly people. Join us as we explore this underrated gem of Central America!

Explore the sprawling city of Managua, filled with trees and vibrant street art and surrounded by nearby volcanoes, lakes and mountains. Where downtown Managua stood prior to the 1972 earthquake, is now a mixture of parks and open green spaces punctuated by monuments, where it’s not unusual to see horses grazing.

Head to the Masaya Volcano National Park to marvel at the mysterious cones, craters and lava flows of active volcanoes; and take a ferry out into Lake Nicaragua to the island of Ometepe, home of sparkling beaches, lush rainforests and the perfect volcanic cone of Concepción.

Shop for vibrant textiles, artworks and handicrafts made by local artisans at the famous Masaya market; and fall in love with Granada, Nicaragua's oldest city, with its laidback atmosphere and gorgeous colonial architecture painted in vibrant candy colours.

Join one of our Central American Journey departures and get a taste of gorgeous Nicaragua!
