Great Himalaya Trail

Carving a path of more than 4500 km through the mighty Himalaya from Bhutan to Pakistan, the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) is the longest and highest alpine walking track on Earth.

World Expeditions is proudly the first to offer fully-supported commercial treks along the entire length of the Nepal section of the GHT (1700 km), traversing the country from east to west and offering an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, cultures and experiences.

Make no mistake, this is a grueling challenge requiring a high level of fitness, commitment and determination—but your hard work will be justly rewarded with a transformative journey through remote and remarkable environments on what is arguably the world’s most epic trek.

Soaking up a daily-changing landscape of spectacular views of the Himalaya, you’ll trek along winding mountain trails that lead to remote villages and rarely-visited valleys and ascend high passes between the snowcapped faces of the world’s highest peaks.

You’ll encounter the rich cultures of the isolated communities that welcome you along the way, and forge lifelong friendships with your fellow trekkers and support crew. As part of our commitment to sustainable tourism we take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints behind in these fragile mountain environments.

The Nepal GHT can be undertaken in one continuous trek of 152 days, but acknowledging that most of us simply don’t have the luxury of this sort of time for our adventures, we’ve crafted seven stand-alone stages that can be completed individually or trekked together to make up the full traverse.

Take a look at our GHT treks and join us for a life-changing trekking experience!

World first

World Expeditions operated the first commercially guided and fully supported expedition along the entire length of the Nepal section of the GHT, a representation of exploratory trekking at its finest. Our ability to pioneer this challenging trek underscores our superb logistics and crew in Nepal and embodies the essence of World Expeditions' travel philosophy.

Unrivalled experience

World Expeditions is recognised as an industry leader, offering fully supported and professionally guided expeditions across Nepal. We have been operating treks throughout the Himalaya for over 40 years, and our guides are some of the few individuals globally who have hiked the entire Nepal GHT. From our crew in the field to our support staff in Kathmandu, we take care of all the complex planning and logistics, allowing you to focus on the journey ahead.

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel is at the heart of every program that we offer in Nepal. World Expeditions is a founding member of the International Porter Protection Group and has pioneered many sustainable tourism initiatives that focus on local communities. When you walk the GHT with us, you are supporting both the local industry and environmental sustainability; matters of utmost importance along the GHT where remote communities remain relatively unchanged today.

Expert guides

Our guides in the field are the real key to our success on the GHT. Highly trained in both wilderness medicine and leadership, they continually prove to be incredibly experienced professionals. As you walk through the Himalaya, our leaders offer the right amount of support and guidance to ensure you have a memorable expedition.

Litter collection

The 10 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 10 pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our Nepal treks. This simple yet effective initative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal and the Labor Union of Nepal, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Nepal to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and blankets. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency helicopter evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, woolen socks and gloves, leather or canvas shoes, sunglasses and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 30kgs.

Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites in the Everest and Annapurna regions contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimise our environmental footprint by using yak or cow dung to fuel heaters, kerosene to cook meals and boil water, rainwater tanks, composting and septic toilets and incinerators to burn paper and non-toxic plastic waste.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy fully supported camping in remote and spectacular locations along the GHT, with our outstanding crew of sherpas, porters and kitchen staff. While the campsite locations have been handpicked for their location, our commitment to responsible travel ensures our footprint is kept to a minimum.
