Ahmedabad was founded by Ahmed Shah in the early 15th Century. Ahmedabad is among the largest textile centres in India and is known as the Manchester of India. This morning we will embark on a city tour to get our bearings and understand a little of the history of this remarkable city, with its clusters of heritage havelis and pols where people go about their everyday lives. The mosque of Siddi Saiyad 1572 carved with enormous delicacy and is world renowned for its superb yellow stone tracery. The delicate ‘Tree of Life’ motif has become the distinguishing symbol of Ahmedabad. Lunch Gujarati Thalis at the House of Mangaldas Girdhardas. After lunch we will visit a rag paper factory, Ghandi’s Ashram (cotton spinning) and a cotton Khadi on Ashram road where handspun cloth can be bought. In teh late afternoon (3-5pm) we'll visit the Shreyas Folk Museum which houses colourful works of embroidery, wood carving, metal work bead work and utensils, leather work, costumes and paintings from communities throughout the region.
